Disco Diaries is a free weekly newsletter. If you enjoy it, consider supporting it financially. You can send a few dollars straight to my Venmo (@katyabaro). No wiggle room in the budget? No problem. Sharing this newsletter with friends who may enjoy it shows immense support, too.
Step 1: Notice the Shape
The clouds are full of faces and pictures, if you want to see them. You’ve learned how to open yourself up to the possibility of an alligator in the sky. Now open yourself up to the shapes in melodies. Did you find something? Good. That’s just for you.
Step 2: Make a Sketch
Things become jumbled quickly, so record it while you can. Sketch it in colors, sing it into your phone, describe it in words. Recreate it for your future self.
Step 3: Remember
Later, when the initial excitement has worn off, you will find the sketch, and you will remember. Memory can’t be identical to the real thing, but it’s the pathway to the tune. Hear it old and feel it new. Remember it again and again, and if it has weight and substance, if it comes back to you easy, you might be in for some romance.
Step 4: Court the Melody
Relationships take effort if you want them to be true and deep. Spend time with the bones of your song. Be present. Hear what it has to say. Give to it and let it give to you. Try to understand its dreams and ambitions.
Step 5: Enjoy It
There’s pleasure in the process, and fulfillment in the expression. It’s yours to guard and share as you please. Keep it small or make it big. Adore it, share it, hate it, sing it. Your song is for your before it’s for them. But if and when they hear it, you will feel like a sorcerer.
