Well good morning captain!
As I write this edition of Disco Diaries, I am sitting at a dirty — filthy, really — picnic table at Dayton State Park Campground in Nevada. Here I am, road tripping across America, indulging in a deep need for travel that developed in part because of my desire to run away from the things that bound me to my original home in Dayton, Ohio, and I end up in another Dayton. This one is situated on U.S. Route 50, also known as The Loneliest Road in America. They say you never take a gas station for granted again after this empty drive. Gas will be the second thing I get, after hot water for a cup of coffee.
Today’s office.

One of the first things I thought about when I woke up today was how much easier it is (for me, at least) to make a nice experience when someone else is there to enjoy it, too. For instance, I’m at least 75% more likely to light incense if someone else is in the room. Why is that?
This morning I’m specifically juxtaposing my time alone on the road with my time with Sonja. Sonja knows how she likes things, and doesn’t hold back in bringing extra amenities for herself to enjoy. Like, on the drive out to California she had a cute vintage tray that we used to prepare and eat our meals. Items like this made the time in the car and at campsites feel more cozy and lovely.
For my drive back, she gifted me a turmeric-dyed tea towel she made, and now I have my own little something to add both beauty and convenience to less-ideal settings like this nasty ol’ picnic table.
Matt, her brother in law (and mine by sisterly affinity) gave me a couple of fresh California figs the other day. These I eat on my bagel for breakfast.
Last night these desert temperatures dropped and I was grateful for every time Jake reminded me to always bring extra layers camping.
There are often little pieces of everyone in my life influencing my days, only this morning they are all tangible items making my time on the lonely road feel more like home.
Hope that everyone is safe and happy this weekend.
